About Wa-Wa Kenya

WA-WA Kenya is an organization founded in 2019 and based in Homa-Bay County in Kenya. WA-WA started as a Community Based Organization and later transformed into a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO). WA-WA Kenya is a Swahili abbreviation meaning Wanawake Wavuvi or fisher folk. At WA-WA, we believe that fish farming, fishing, and boat making are not a preserve for males, but for everyone in the society. WA-WA KENYA envisions that “Every fisherwoman participates in the development as an influential partner”. In order to drive towards this desired future, WA-WA KENYA pathway is its Mission “To support fisher women to achieve their full potential; through provision of appropriate skills enabling them to work their way out of poverty and strengthen their communities”. WA-WA will therefore endeavor to economically support and promote Human rights for the fisher women, youth and the general vulnerable population along the lake in order to achieve an equal and just society. To achieve this, the organization conducts various professional training on fishing, fish farming, boat building, and weaving biodegradable fishing nets, soap and detergent making, beauty and hairdressing, paper making, poultry farming, tailoring and table banking. The organization’s aim is to support, promote and empower fisher folk women, youth and children affected by socio-economic injustices around Lake Victoria region that leads to high poverty index.
