Project Summary

This project utilizes the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Enterprise Model (WASHEM) to deliver sustainable services in informal settlements. It empowers youth groups to manage WASH facilities as profitable social enterprises.

Intervention Areas

WASH (WaterSanitation & Hygiene)

Target Population

Low-Income Individuals & FamiliesVulnerable or Marginalized Populations (General)

Problem Statement

Informal settlements suffer from poor sanitation, waste management, and environmental degradation. Traditional aid models often fail to provide long-term maintenance for WASH infrastructure.

Proposed Solution

The project constructs green WASH facilities (using solar/biogas) and hands them over to trained youth groups. These groups run the facilities as businesses, charging affordable fees for services.

Expected Impact

Outcomes include improved community health, job creation for youth, and enhanced environmental management. The model builds community resilience against climate change impacts like flooding.

Sustainability Plan

The social enterprise model generates daily income to cover maintenance and youth wages. Strong community ownership and public-private partnerships ensure the facilities remain operational and profitable.
