The project is unique in nature being a public-private partnership (PPP) between four entities that have come together to build the synergy required in responding to the current (MHM) menstrual Hygiene management and sanitation challenges. The coming together of Mwiki public primary School in Kiambu County (beneficiary), Ministry of Education (MOE-providing policy -guidelines), PadMad (a social enterprise providing reusable sanitary towels) (https://padmadkenya.com/ ) - the reusable sanitary towels’ producer, and Maji Na Ufanisi (https://majinaufanisi.org/ )- the lead non-profit organization with vast experience in community-led WASH solutions- (to pool together the expertise and resources needed for successful project implementation).

Project Summary

This PPP initiative improves sanitation at Mwiki Primary School. It constructs facilities and provides MHM education and reusable pads to support 4,965 learners in an informal settlement.

Problem Statement

Mwiki Primary has dilapidated toilets and a high pupil-ratio (1:93). Girls suffer from absenteeism due to lack of menstrual hygiene facilities and products.

Proposed Solution

Construct modern toilets and hand-washing stations. Provide reusable sanitary towels and conduct MHM training for students and teachers.

Expected Impact

Improved school attendance and hygiene standards. Reduction in waterborne diseases and period-related absenteeism. Enhanced dignity for girl learners.

Sustainability Plan

The project uses durable reusable pads (5-year life) to cut costs. School management committees are trained to maintain facilities using school funds.
