Project Summary

Addressing unreliable fish production and associated social evils around Lake Victoria, this project empowers women in the fish value chain. It builds capacity, provides fishing gear, and fosters enterprise to alleviate poverty and gender-based violence.

Intervention Areas

Child Protection & WelfareSexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV)Value Chain Development (e.g. Skills Training)

Target Population

Low-Income Individuals & FamiliesVulnerable or Marginalized Populations (General)

Problem Statement

Declining fish stocks have led to poverty, 'sex for fish' practices, child labor, and high HIV prevalence among women and youth in the Lake Victoria region.

Proposed Solution

Empower women through business training and provision of fishing gear to own and run fish enterprises, creating a human-rights-based advocacy model.

Expected Impact

Economic growth for women and the community, reduction in social evils (child labor, GBV), and creation of independent female-led fish businesses.

Sustainability Plan

Profits are reinvested into new community ventures. Financial literacy training enables access to further funding from government and local institutions.
