Baraka Women's Center was established in October 2012 and registered in 2014 as a Community -Based Organization through the sponsorship of Women's Center International (WCI) , a US -based non- profit organization . Baraka Center has served over 3000 vulnerable , marginalized and disadvantaged women and young mothers . Its mission is to provide a safe environment where women living in poverty can access training , support and capital to build healthier and more prosperous lives . BWC started in Nairobi slums and later spread out geographically to Kiambu and Rumuruti in Laikipia County . 80% of the registered and trained beneficiaries are regularly active in the Centers's activities . Members range in age of 17 to 70 years and include many single mothers . Most are undereducated , under - or unemployed , and reside in slums throughout in Nairobi or semi arid areas in Laikipia County . Core programs at BWC include Vocational skills which include hairdressing/ beauty therapy , tailoring / dressmaking , computer , and bead work. To make them good entrepreneurs the members are trained in Entrepreneurship/ Transformative leadership Skills ., Table banking skills , Adult Learning (Literacy ) . Other trainings include Health Education, Self awareness with counseling for survivors of domestic and sexual violence / stress management . The Center's 'ONE -STOP" approach means integrated resources are delivered based on the interrelated needs each woman presents . She becomes a member of a sisterhood in the complex process of restoring her self esteem and sense of hope, the basis for transforming life . BWC engages many local partners to help build women's economic strength and health awareness . These alliances delivers access to loans , financial education , and a variety of health -related information and services
