About Support For Community Response

SCR is an independent not-for-profit organization, registered in Kenya under section 10 of Non-Governmental Organizations Co-coordinating Act in 2009. Mission: Facilitating and Promoting Socio-economic activities, using relevant skills and resources for sustainable development. Vision: A Sustainable, Healthy and Self-reliant Community Our goal is to strengthen grassroots health and development initiatives among underprivileged/vulnerable community members. SCR works through community organizing, used as a means of effort to obtain better health and improved economic standards. As a healthy and community development organization, SCR supports community initiatives and participation from various interest groups such as women, farmers, artisans, youth, parents and assists in creating frameworks for response/action. The registered office is located in Mariakani, along Mariakani - Kaloleni road, Kilifi County. SCR works with a Board of directors who make major decisions on organization policy and strategy. SCR plans to use its resources effectively, keeping administrative costs at a minimal. SCR’s vision is to support community response to health, food, water and sanitation challenges facing the region. To achieve its goals, there is need to mobilize resources beyond those of local community volunteers. In order to realize any practical impact in improvement of community livelihoods, the operation of SCR focuses on a wide spectrum of health, relief and development initiatives in rural Kwale and Kilifi Counties aimed at mitigating the effects of: 1. Persistent periods of food insecurity and subsequent malnutrition, especially among children under five, pregnant and lactating mothers. 2. HIV/AIDS 3. High levels of poverty 4. Poor hygiene and sanitation 5. Lack of access to safe and clean water for domestic use Specific Program Objectives: (a) Health Activities • HIV/AIDS prevention (targeting the reproductive age bracket, 15-49 + years) • Support of community care initiatives for HIV-infected • Malaria prevention (b) Water and sanitation Activities • Support initiatives to access of save water for domestic use • Promotion of, construction and use of toilets (c) Nutrition and food security Activities • Design and implementation of participatory and sustainable nutritional interventions • To conduct rapid nutrition assessments and surveys in the area of operation • Nutritional training of health workers and care takers, nutritionists, doctors • Training of mothers on basic child nutrition at the antenatal and postnatal clinics (d) Economic development Activities • Promotion and support of income-generating activities for the community members • Promotion of savings and investment schemes for local communities Other objectives are: 1 .To provide scholarships for the education of needy children who may not necessarily be in the homes. 2. To Advocate and Lobby for the rights of children. 3 To seek and develop financial or other resources to undertake all the mentioned objectives and other activities which promote the overall mission and vision of the organization. RUNNING ACTIVITIES: • PUR (point of water treatment material) distribution to schools and households of people living with HIV and AIDS who do not access tapped water for them to treat dirty and unsafe water to make it safe for domestic use. • Behavior change campaigns in clean water and improved sanitation through theatre and public meetings. • Networking with public, community and private institutions involved in health and hygiene initiatives • Kitchen gardening in households of people living with HIV and AIDS. • Improving local poultry breeds by providing improved cockerels to each member of the HIV and AIDS support groups • Improving local goat breeds by providing improved he and she-goats to HIV and AIDS support groups
