Project Summary
This project integrates oral health into the Community Health Promoter (CHP) program in five counties. It trains CHPs to provide preventive oral care and education, shifting the focus from curative to promotive health.
Intervention Areas
Target Population
Problem Statement
Kenya has a severe shortage of dentists (3:100,000), leading to a high prevalence of preventable oral diseases. Poor oral hygiene and harmful cultural practices like Infant Oral Mutilation persist due to lack of awareness.
Proposed Solution
Train 10,000 CHPs and 400 Community Health Assistants (CHAs) in oral health. Equip them to conduct household screening, education, and referrals within the existing Primary Care Network.
Expected Impact
Reduced burden of dental caries and gum disease. Elimination of harmful practices like Infant Oral Mutilation. Enhanced early detection and referral of oral health conditions at the community level.
Sustainability Plan
The project leverages the government's existing Community Health Strategy. Since CHPs are now on government payroll, integrating oral health into their routine duties ensures the program's longevity without separate funding.
