The project is unique in nature being a public-private partnership (PPP) between four entities that have come together to build the synergy required in responding to the current (MHM) menstrual Hygiene management and sanitation challenges. The coming together of Mwiki public primary School in Kiambu County (beneficiary), Ministry of Education (MOE-providing policy -guidelines), PadMad (a social enterprise providing reusable sanitary towels) (https://padmadkenya.com/ ) - the reusable sanitary towels’ producer, and Maji Na Ufanisi (https://majinaufanisi.org/ )- the lead non-profit organization with vast experience in community-led WASH solutions- (to pool together the expertise and resources needed for successful project implementation).
Project Summary
This PPP initiative upgrades WASH facilities at Mwiki Primary School to support 4,965 learners. It combines infrastructure development with MHM education and the provision of reusable sanitary towels.
Intervention Areas
Target Population
Problem Statement
Mwiki Primary faces a sanitation crisis with a pupil-toilet ratio of 1:93. The lack of adequate sanitation and MHM facilities leads to high absenteeism among girls and poor hygiene standards.
Proposed Solution
The project will construct modern sanitation facilities, provide 5-year reusable pads to 1,870 girls, and conduct hygiene education. It leverages a Public-Private Partnership model for delivery.
Expected Impact
Impacts include improved school attendance, particularly for girls, better academic performance, and reduced waterborne diseases. The project promotes dignity and a healthy learning environment.
Sustainability Plan
The school management committee is trained to maintain the facilities using school funds. The provision of durable reusable pads (5-year lifespan) eliminates the recurring cost of disposable products.
