About Start A Library Trust

Start A Library Trust, is a registered non-profit organisation whose vision is that, One day, every learner will have the literacy and life skills required to transform Africa. Our programs target school-going children in public primary schools aged 4-14 and are focused on three pillars; 1. Establishment of Model School Libraries to enhance of reading materials (storybooks) to public school going learners: SAL has established 250 school libraries in 21 counties of Kenya, benefitting 211,826 learners. 2. Capacity Building: With inputs from the Kenya National Library Services, SAL trains teachers and student librarians to manage libraries and organizes reading programs in schools to ensure the books we donate are regularly used for sustainability. We have trained over 3,000 teachers and 5000 learners as Teacher Librarians and Junior Reading Champions, respectively. 3. Advocacy: We collaborate with other civil societies and government agencies to develop and implement effective literacy and life skills policies and guidelines. We also amplify children's voices to champion their rights and address topical issues affecting children using different literary programmes: Our flagship campaign, the Annual Read Aloud, held every 16th June to commemorate the International Day of the African Child, attracts over 2,000 schools and over 250,000 learners who read the same text simultaneously in different locations
